MetLife’s 2026 U.S. Employee Benefit Trends Study reveals that only 44% of America’s workforce is holistically healthy, as rising costs erode well-being gains. The research found that 83% of employees cite rising living expenses and medical costs as their top stressors, while 77% point to economic uncertainty as a major concern. Half of employees report avoiding medical care due to out-of-pocket costs, and workers miss an average of 6.1 days annually due to health-related issues.

The study, based on surveys of 2,480 HR decision-makers and 2,541 full-time employees conducted in October 2025, also found that for every $1 invested in employee health, employers can expect an average $2.30 return through productivity gains, improved retention, and lower medical spending. Employee engagement stands at 69%, loyalty at 77%, and productivity at 77% in 2026.
